Seven miles south of Edinburgh, Roslin is a picturesque village best known as the home of Rosslyn Chapel. Built in the 15th century, the chapel is adorned with intricate stonework that has sparked centuries of fascination, from tales of the Knights Templar and the Holy Grail, to an appearance in the novel, The Da Vinci Code. It sits on the edge of Roslin Glen Country Park, a haven for walking, cycling and wildlife spotting. Here you can explore wooded trails and take in breathtaking viewpoints along the North Esk river. The ruins of Rosslyn Castle also overlook the glen.
Roslin is steeped in history and myth, stretching back to the year 203, when a local legend tells that the village was established by a Pict named Asterius. It was the site of the Battle of Roslin in 1303, and it became the seat of Clan Sinclair in the 15th century. Today, with its famous chapel, castle ruins and picturesque glen, it is a popular and easy to reach place to visit from Edinburgh. There is a regular bus service from Princes Street, which takes around an hour. Alternatively, you can drive there in less than 30 minutes.
