Princes Street
Address: Princes Street, Edinburgh, EH2 2HG
Princes Street is Edinburgh’s main shopping street, set in the shadows of Edinburgh Castle. Part of the city’s New Town, it was built from around 1770, during the reign of King George III. A common mispronunciation you may hear is “Princess Street”, but it is in fact, “Princes Street”. Named after two princes; George III’s two sons, Prince George and Prince Frederick.
Originally, Princes Street was a residential street for the rich. Many of the 18th century houses still exist, although they have been turned into shops and other businesses. Only number 95, which is now a kilt shop, retains its original design of a five storey building (three floors plus basement and attic), set back from the street with steps down to basement level and a narrower staircase up to the ground floor entrance. Today, Princes Street is a busy retail area, filled with high street shops, cafes, banks and hotels.
