Traverse Theatre
Address: 10 Cambridge Street, Edinburgh, EH1 2ED
This contemporary theatre company commissions and produces new plays and adaptations, and partners with other theatre companies to present a wide range of shows. It is known as Scotland’s new writing theatre, giving opportunities to new writers and encouraging everyone to engage with its productions. The Traverse Theatre is also involved with many arts festivals and is a major venue for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Edinburgh International Children’s Festival.
The Traverse Theatre started out in the 1960s as a theatre club. Interestingly, the name Traverse is a misspelling of the “transverse” stage layout, which stuck despite the error. The theatre company moved to its current location on Cambridge Street in 1992. This venue has two performance spaces – a traditional theatre auditorium and a smaller more flexible studio. There is also a lively café bar area where you can get a drink for the show.
