Filmhouse
Address: 88 Lothian Road, Edinburgh, EH3 9BZ
The Filmhouse on Lothian Road is a renowned independent cinema, which showcases a range of quality films from all over the world. Located in a converted 19th-century church building, the venue opened in 1979 and has developed over the years to offer 4 screens and a large café bar. The cinema programme includes hundreds of screenings and events each year, featuring a diverse selection of films and events such as workshops, panel discussions and Q&As.
In 2022, this iconic cinema in Edinburgh sadly closed. But following a successful campaign to save and refurbish it, it reopened in 2025. The restoration involved a £2 million refurbishment, adding a forth screen and making substantial improvements throughout. Building on its rich history, the Filmhouse continues to screen a wide variety of films, while bringing its cutting-edge facilities and modern social spaces into a new era.
