Stockbridge
Location: Stockbridge, Edinburgh, EH4
Stockbridge is a vibrant area of Edinburgh, just north of the New Town. It was once a separate village, but became part of Edinburgh city in the 1800s. With its mix of independent shops, eateries and attractions, this is a lovely place to explore, just a 15-minute walk away from Princes Street. It is close to picturesque spots, such as the Water of Leith and Dean Village. Stockbridge also has its own market, which is held on Sundays.
The Stockbridge area takes its name from the Stock Bridge, a bridge spanning the Water of Leith. It comes from the Scots term stocc brycg, which means timber bridge, although this was later replaced with a stone structure. Most of the architecture is Georgian or Victorian, built as New Town redevelopments expanded northward. The first Stockbridge Market was held in 1825 and you can still find the original stone entrance on St Stephen’s Place.
