The King’s Theatre opened in 1906 with a festive production of Cinderella and the King’s Panto became an annual tradition from then on. In fact, there have only been 3 years in its long history, when the panto did not go ahead. It was also known for variety, drama and opera. Many celebrities have graced the King’s stage over the years. Including Laurence Olivier, Sean Connery and Katharine Hepburn.
The theatre has undergone many structural changes and refurbishments over the years, but the interior retains its very grand and lavish look. The auditorium originally had three balconies and had a capacity of up to 2,500 people. However, the highest platform was removed and now seats 1,350. Today, the King’s hosts a full programme of West End dramas, touring productions and community theatre.

- See a touring show, community production or pantomime.
- Enjoy refreshments from one of three bars, located on each level.
- Be sure to look around the auditorium before the lights go down and appreciate the opulent surroundings.
- Don’t forget to look up at the ceiling mural.
- Find the foundation stone, which was laid in 1905 by industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. This is located on the stairwell landing leading to the Grand Circle Bar.
