Hopetoun House
Address: South Queensferry, Edinburgh, EH30 9RW
Hopetoun House is a stately home located in South Queensferry, a small town to the west of Edinburgh. It was built in 1701 for Scottish nobleman Charles Hope and his family. Charles’ father, John Hope, drowned with the sinking of HMS Gloucester in 1682, after giving up his rescue boat seat to save the Duke Of York. In recognition, his son Charles was made the 1st Earl of Hopetoun in 1703. Today, it is still home to the Hope family, occupied by Adrian Hope, 4th Marquess of Linlithgow.
The house opens to the public as a visitor attraction every summer, usually from April to September. During this time, you can visit the magnificent house and surrounding grounds. With elegant Georgian interiors, finely crafted furniture, artwork and decorative items, there is much to see throughout the building, which was hugely extended from 1720 to 1752. You can also explore the extensive grounds, including a walled garden, woodland garden and wilderness area.
