Midhope Castle
Address: Abercorn, South Queensferry, EH30 9SL
Midhope Castle is a 15th century tower house in South Queensferry. Although it sits within the grounds of Hopetoun Estate, it is over a mile away from Hopetoun House, in a private farming location near Abercorn. Interest in Midhope Castle has grown in recent years, since it was used as an exterior filming location for series 1 and 2 of the romantic time-travel drama Outlander, where the house became “Lallybroch”, home of Jamie Fraser.
The exterior is in relatively good condition, but the interior is completely derelict and unsafe to enter. Visitors are allowed access seasonally to view the exterior, but must obtain a vehicle pass and keep to visiting guidelines. Access may not be possible on some days and there are a few conditions and restrictions, so call Hopetoun to check before visiting. Please note, there are no guest facilities on site.
