Fort Kinnaird is one of Edinburgh’s largest and busiest retail centres, containing a wide range of shopping and leisure outlets. Situated to the east of the city, it’s easily accessible by car with its own large car park. There are also regular buses which run from the city centre. It has an open-air layout and a broad selection of stores, with everything from fashion and beauty to homeware and electronics. There are also several cafés and restaurants and a cinema, making it great for a full day out.
The Fort Kinnaird site was originally home to Newcraighall Colliery, also known as The Klondyke, which operated for 70 years before closing in 1968. Its transformation from a coal mine to a retail destination began in 1989 with the opening of Craig Park, later Kinnaird Park and then Fort Kinnaird. Over the years, the shopping park expanded through multiple phases, incorporating sites like the former Niddrie Brickworks and evolving into a larger complex. Today, it is a large, bustling centre for retail and leisure, affectionately referred to as The Fort.
