Cramond

Cramond

Location: Cramond, Edinburgh, EH4

Cramond is an old fishing village to the north of Edinburgh. It’s very picturesque, with a sandy beach, harbour, lovely seaside walks, beach-side shops, pubs and cafés. The area is full of history too, as it is one of the earliest known sites of human settlement in Scotland. You can reach Cramond by bus from the city centre, which takes 30 to 40 minutes.

When the tide is low, it’s possible to walk over the causeway to Cramond Island. A striking row of concrete pylons runs along one side of the causeway, which was used as a submarine defence barrier during the Second World War. From the island there are great views back to the mainland and all around the coastline. However, you must check the noticeboard for safe crossing times before going across, as it’s possible to get stuck on the island if the tide comes in.
