Union Canal
Starting point: Fountainbridge, Edinburgh, EH3 9QG
The Union Canal stretches from Edinburgh city centre out to Falkirk, where it links to the Forth and Clyde Canal. The two canals are connected by the Falkirk Wheel, a rotating boat lift and popular visitor attraction, which opened in 2002. Restoring the link between the canals, which had been separated since the 1930s and later closed. Now re-opened, the waterways are back in use and full of life once more.
Popular activities along the Union Canal include walking, running and cycling, fishing, boating and paddling. It provides a great route in and out of the city, and a peaceful place to enjoy our local nature and wildlife. Look out for swans, herons, toads, beavers, butterflies, insects and more.
