Rubbing statues for good luck is a popular tourist custom, but it is often discouraged due to the damage it can do. This trend has now unfortunately extended to our own Greyfriars Bobby. People are rubbing his nose all day long, and sadly, this is causing it to wear away.
A new and damaging trend
The charming story of Greyfriars Bobby attracts tourists to a memorial that stands at the top of Candlemaker Row in Edinburgh – A life-size statue of the famous Skye Terrier that was unveiled in 1873. The practice of rubbing the statue’s nose started some time around the year 2012, so it is not a long-standing tradition. Many people believe it will bring them good fortune or simply serve as a friendly gesture. However, the constant rubbing has led to the nose wearing away and losing its finish. Over recent years, signs and campaigns have been initiated to spread awareness. Restoration efforts have been carried out too, but this is costly and only ever a temporary fix.

So, instead of rubbing Bobby’s nose, you are encouraged to look but don’t touch. You’ll be doing your bit to preserve the statue and respect our city’s history and heritage.
