Last weekend, I went for a family swim with my husband and kids (aged 3 and 5) to the leisure pool at Xcite Livingston, which is about a 30-minute drive from the centre of Edinburgh. We like this pool. It’s warm and shallow. There’s a toddler play pool, two flumes, rapids and a bubble pool. They have family changing rooms and it’s very reasonably priced. Basically, everything we need for a family swim.

The kids love it. They have both been scared of the water in the past. In fact, there have been times when they completely refused to get into the water at all. My son is still a little nervous. But here, he can stay in shallow waters and just have fun splashing around. He likes the bubbles and the waterfalls in the toddler pool. He also enjoys been carried around the rapids.

My daughter would spend the entire time going on the flumes if she could. However, today they were alternating between opening the flumes and the rapids, at 20-minute intervals. This actually worked out quite well, as it encouraged her to come into the pool for a swim when the flumes were closed.

It’s definitely a family pool, with lots of children and babies around. Not the kind of place you would go for lane swimming or to relax. But for us it’s absolutely perfect. There’s also a soft play room and various sports classes and activities for all ages within the building.

An hour long swim session is charged at £13 for a family ticket, which we think is very good value. We will be back there again very soon no doubt!
