We had a family day out yesterday to see the Peppa Pig’s Surprise live show at the King’s Theatre. All four of us went along – me, my husband and our kids aged 1 and 3. It’s the first time we’ve all been to a show together and we were looking forward to it. The kids love Peppa .. and my husband and I actually find it quite funny too!
It was the first time I’ve ever been to the King’s and I thought it was a lovely theatre. Quite small compared to the Playhouse and Festival Theatre, but that just means the audience is closer to the action.
Visually, I thought the show was fantastic. Puppeteers wearing black operated the smaller characters such as Peppa and George. Actors in costume played Mummy and Daddy Pig. A presenter appeared on stage with them who interacted with the audience, introduced the characters and moved the story along. They recreated a few scenes fans of the books and TV show would be familiar with such as a drive in the car, a trip to the seaside, bath time and bed time. I thought it all worked really well.
The story was quite simple and easy to follow and there was music and lots of songs too. I did feel it lacked the humour of the TV show – which is aimed at kids but has a few jokes in for the adults as well. My husband and I were hoping for a bit of that in the stage version. However, I was delighted when Mr Potato made an appearance. He is a personal favourite of mine, but perhaps I shouldn’t admit that!
Amazingly, my one year old sat still throughout most of the show, and that hardly ever happens .. EVER! My three year old complained a few times that the songs were too loud and she lost interest towards the end. Overall she seemed to enjoy it, but she wasn’t as excited as I thought she would have been. The running time was 1 hour 20 mins (including interval) and that was just a bit too long for my kids.
Peppa Pig’s Surprise is in Edinburgh for this weekend only. It then continues its tour of the UK, so there’s still time to catch it in a city near you.
