On Sunday, the Netherlands National Circus invited me to their show at Ocean Terminal in Leith. I had never been to the circus before, so thought this was a good opportunity to check it out with my two-year-old daughter.
It was free seating inside the tent and we got great seats right at the front. As the show started it all went dark and my daughter was a little scared, but as soon as the lights came on and the stage filled with performers she was fine.
In the first half we saw a tight rope walker, trapeze artist, clown, magician and a team of trampolinists. My daughter was completely mesmerised for most of it. I’m not sure she always followed what was going on. However, there was so much colour, light and movement that it held her interest for a whole hour. They definitely aimed the comedy routines at children, with lots of slapstick. The slightly older kids in the audience were in hysterics!
During the interval we went out to the fun fair, which was just outside the tent. An hour is a long time for a two-year-old to sit still, so she expended a bit of energy running around and went on one of the little rides. I soon realised I wasn’t going to get her back inside for the second half. A hour was long enough for her!
We enjoyed our visit to the circus, but my daughter isn’t quite old enough for the full show. I think children ages 5 and up would get more out of it.
The Netherlands National Circus has moved on from Edinburgh now, but they are still touring the UK, so there’s still a chance to catch them!
