Mimi’s Bakehouse is a quirky cafe and bakery located on The Shore in Leith. I met up with my friend there earlier this week for lunch.
First impressions were good. The cafe has a really nice style, and everything looks clean and new. I loved the bunting and the little messages on the walls such as “I knew you were coming so I baked a cake”. The wallpaper was definitely memorable, featuring cartoon topless ladies holding strategically placed cakes! The bakehouse is family run, and I liked that you could see the personality of the owners shining through. There were even family pictures on the back wall so you could find out more about them.
For lunch I ordered the half soup and half sandwich option from “Mimi’s Lavish Lunch Menu”. Soup of the day was Cream of Mushroom and I chose the Thai-inspired Penang Chicken sandwich to go with it. Both soup and sandwich were lovely, flavoursome and filling, but I had to save room for cake as this is obviously the speciality at Mimi’s.
The cakes are displayed along the bar at the front of the cafe under a sign that reads “It’s all about the cake”. There was a good selection and the portions were very generous. I couldn’t believe the size of the chocolate brownies! I chose a piece of Caramel Shortbread, which was absolutely delicious. And I also tried some of my friend’s cheesecake, which was enormous and equally tasty. To drink I had a pot of tea, and they offered top ups which I thought was nice.
The location on The Shore is great. We sat with a view of the water and my little girl who came with us was so excited to see the ducks. She also very much enjoyed the cake!
We had a lovely time at Mimi’s and I would certainly recommend it for tasty treats in nice surroundings.
