Kinky Boots is in town and I was at Edinburgh Playhouse last night for the opening show.

The story is loosly based on a documentary about a shoe factory in England, which was broadcast in 1999. In an effort to save his struggling business, the factory owner was branching out into the trans market by making women’s shoes in men’s sizes. Sadly, his factory closed 18 months later, but his plight inspired the film Kinky Boots in 2005.

This fabulous stage version wasn’t what I was expecting at all. I’d never seen the film and wasn’t familiar with the story. I knew that Cyndi Lauper had written the music and lyrics, but I assumed this would be her known hits, worked into some kind of story. Instead, she wrote the songs especially for this musical.

I really enjoyed the show. The songs were fantastic and the performances were all very strong. I felt it got better as it went along, as the story built up and we got to know the characters. For me, Kayi Ushe, who played lead role Lola, totally stole the show. He has an amazing voice and stage presence. I was also really impressed by Corrie star, Paula Lane, who played a really funny and likeable Lauren. And she can sing too!

This production reminded me a little of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Not just because it features drag queens, but because it’s essentially about the importance of being yourself and accepting people for who they are. But then it also has the feel-good factor of British hits like Calendar Girls, centred around ordinary people doing extraordinary things. It’s in good company anyway, as I love these shows.

Thank you to Edinburgh Playhouse and the cast of Kinky Boots for a wonderful evening. This production is here in Edinburgh until 5th January 2019.
