My parents were here for a visit, so we all went into town for a pub lunch. We decided on Greyfriars Bobby’s Bar, just beside the famous statue of Greyfriars Bobby (Bobby was the legendary Skye Terrier who stayed by his master’s graveside at Greyfriars for 14 years, until his own death in 1872 when he was buried alongside him.)

The pub is very traditional inside, with dark wood panelled walls and a low ceiling. Although it’s small with dark walls, it still feels light and bright and quite spacious. They had a very good lunchtime menu offering a main course and drink for £8, which I ordered from. I had the haggis, neeps and tatties and glass of white wine.

I really enjoyed the haggis. This is a dish I have grown to love since I moved to Scotland 10 years ago. Haggis is a pudding containing mutton, oatmeal and mixed spices, and tastes like spicy mince. They served it in the traditional way with mashed swede and potatoes, and a tasty gravy sauce.

Afterwards we took a walk around Greyfriars Graveyard, which is a very interesting place. I had been there before for a ghost tour, but it was good to see it in the daylight. There are some amazing, creepy looking gravestones depicting skulls and screaming faces! There is also part of the Flodden Wall inside the graveyard, a city wall built in 1513 to help protect Edinburgh from invasion.

Greyfriars Kirkyard

Then we went into Greyfriars Kirk, a lovely church with beautiful stain-glass windows. There is a very small museum inside all about the history of the church. It displays a rare copy of the National Covenant, an important document signed in the Kirk in 1638. There is also a famous oil painting of Greyfriars Bobby by John MacLeod.

We had a great day out at Greyfriars!
