It was a beautiful sunny day on Sunday, so my husband and I took the kids along to Fort Douglas for the afternoon. Fort Douglas is a new playground at Dalkieth Country Park suitable for ages 0-12, which opened just last year as part of a huge site re-development. We’d heard lots of good things from fellow parents, so thought it was about time we went along with our 2 and 4 year olds.
We arrived at Dalkeith Country Park by car just after lunch time. We drove through the estate following the signs for the Fort Douglas playground. It’s a lovely site beside the River Esk and lots of people were enjoying walks and taking part in outdoor activities. It was all very clean and well organised, with parking attendants directing us to a space.
The playground was really busy when we got there. The kids were so excited and ran in straight away to explore. Some of the equipment was for ages 6 and above, but there was still loads for the little ones to do. Things to ride on, swing from, slide down and climb over. My 2 year old son loved the area full of little tractors. He spent ages walking over the wall of tyres that surrounded it. My daughter is 4 and her favourite thing was definitely the tunnel slide. There was always a bit of a queue for that one, but she must have been down it at least ten times! They also both loved walking through the secret tunnel.
It cost us just £3 to get in to the Fort Douglas playground. That was for my 4 year old (adults and 0-2s go free). We thought this was excellent value. The kids had a brilliant time and really didn’t want to leave. We had to promise them we would be back again soon .. and we will be. There are picnic tables in the playground, so we plan to bring lunch next time and stay for longer.
