Last week, Cuckoo’s Bakery invited me to their new store on Bruntsfield Place. This is Cuckoo’s second property after opening on Dundas Street in 2011. They have become famous in Edinburgh for their range of quirky cupcakes. As I have an incredibly sweet tooth, I was more than happy to check out their new place and try the cakes for myself.
When we arrived the shop was packed with owners and staff, their friends and family, local business people, bloggers and journalists. I obviously wasn’t the only one eager to get my hands on free cake and bubbles!
I love the clean open plan style of the room, very modern in design. An elaborate chandelier, strings of bunting, old fashioned crockery and a cuckoo clock give it a retro twist. The delicious looking cupcakes are in an antique habidashery cabinet. Although mostly a take-away shop, there is a nice space at the back to eat in.
There were rows and rows of different cupcake flavours and it was almost impossible to decide which ones to try. I went for ‘Sticky Toffee Pudding’ and ‘Chocolate Chocolate’. They were extremely rich, indulgent and yummy. I also tried some amazing chocolate and caramel brownies. I will most certainly be back to work my way through the rest of the menu! I’m particularly intrigued by the special cocktail-inspired cupcakes or ‘Cuptails’ which they create every Friday.
I spoke to a few members of staff, all very friendly and clearly proud of their new cake shop. It’s an exciting time for this growing Edinburgh business and I wish them the best of luck with their new venture.
