I’ve just tried Clubbercise for the first time. A dance fitness class with club anthems from 90s classics to the latest chart hits, taught in a darkened room with glow sticks and disco lights. This promo video is a great introduction, if you haven’t heard of it already.

I hadn’t done a fitness class for about five years, before I had kids. I’d been looking for a class in Edinburgh to get me back into exercise and when I heard about a new local Clubbercise group, it sounded right up my street.

When I arrived it was like walking into a nightclub. The room was dark and there were disco lights and neon colours all around. There were about 60 of us, all ladies. Many wearing bright clothing and some even had face paint. Most of us had purchased a pair of re-usable, battery-operated glow sticks, which are used as part of the routines.

The instructor was fantastic. She had so much energy and enthusiasm. Although the room was dark, it was easy to see what she was doing because she had a fluorescent top, light up shoes and glow sticks. The moves were simple and fun – there was even a bit of ‘big fish, little fish, cardboard box’ in there! Because it was easy to follow, I could put in loads of energy without worrying too much about what my feet were doing. Also, it was dark so no-one could see when I went wrong.

I absolutely loved it! It was so much more fun than a normal fitness class. The club dance classics provided the perfect soundtrack and kept me going for the full hour. I was completely shattered at the end and really felt like I’d had a good work out. I was aching a bit the next day, but I see that as a good thing. It means I worked hard. I’ll definitely be back for more.

You can find your nearest Clubbercise class on the Class Finder website. There are loads in Edinburgh to choose from. My class was £5 for an hour long session, plus a one-off extra £1 for the glow sticks.
