This weekend I visited the Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick with my family. We went to see a show that’s on as part of Edinburgh International Science Festival called ‘Captain Flap Flies Forth’. It’s an interactive science show about the principles of flight. When I was looking through the Science Festival programme, it stood out as one of the only shows suitable for all ages. As I have two young children aged 1 and 3, it sounded perfect.
The show is on at 2 pm daily during the Easter holidays and is included in the admission price to the Seabird Centre. We went along early so we could have a look around the Discovery Centre first. I have already reviewed this as part of our visit last year and the kids had lots of fun again this time. Being a year older, I found they liked different things. My youngest was fascinated with the life-size models of seabirds, and my eldest enjoyed controlling the live cameras to watch the birds over on the neighbouring islands.
After some lunch we went along to the small theatre inside the centre for the show. The story was about Captain Flap, an aviator, who had crash landed his plane. He needed to learn the principles of flight so that he could get back in the air. It was a one-man show, and the actor was very engaging with the kids. He talked through the basic science behind flight using experiments with volunteers from the audience.
It was a good idea and also very educational, but I did feel it should have been for ages five and over. My kids were too young to understand it. The older children in the audience were able to join in and answer questions and they seemed to be having lots of fun. It did hold the attention of my three year old quite well though and she said she enjoyed it.
After sitting still for almost an hour, it was time to let off some steam at the nearby beach. We all had a great time playing in the sand and watching the waves. The kids didn’t want to go home!
We had a lovely day out in North Berwick, as always. But I think we’ll leave it a couple of years before we try another science show!
