It was my little girl’s 2nd birthday this week. We had her party with the family on the weekend, so on her actual birthday my husband and I decided to take her to Butterfly and Insect World followed by lunch at the new Elginhaugh Farm pub.

Butterfly and Insect World is located at Dobbies Garden World in Lasswade, just off the Edinburgh Bypass. It’s quite small, but we found there was a lot to see.

The first section is the Butterfly World, which is a large greenhouse full of tropical plants, fish, and a great variety of butterflies, moths and insects. We got really close to the butterflies, some even landed on us, and there were many beautiful species. My daughter really enjoyed seeing them, although she got a little scared when the larger ones flew right up to her.

Behind the butterfly world were the insect and reptile houses, where we saw snakes, spiders, lizards, hedgehogs, scorpions, stick insects and much more! Again, my daughter was enthralled by all the different creatures. She thought the chameleon was a dinosaur, which we found very funny!

As it was midweek, we were the only visitors so we had the place to ourselves. This was great, although none of the talks or handling and feeding demos appeared to be on. We still had a great time and it took us about an hour to make our way around. Tickets cost £7.50 per adult and under-3s went free. We had some Tesco Clubcard Days Out Vouchers to use so it was free for us. Otherwise, I think we would have found it very expensive for what it was. I’m sure if the entrance fee was cheaper it would have been busier.

Afterwards we went to family pub Elginhaugh Farm for lunch, which is just at the other side of the roundabout. This has just recently opened, so everything looked lovely and new. There was a really fantastic play area for kids, which we sat next to. This was just perfect for us, as it meant we could relax knowing there was somewhere safe for our little one to run around. It also had a good layout meaning it was easy to keep an eye on her from our table.

The food was good and reasonably priced and the service was friendly. I had the British Beef and Ale Pie, my husband had the Crispy Chicken Medley and my daughter had the kid’s Chicken Nuggets. It was decent pub food – nothing too exciting but excellent value and no complaints from us. The desserts looked lovely, but we were too full so decided to go home for birthday cake. I think we will go back, mainly because my daughter enjoyed the kids play area so much, whic made it more enjoyable for us all.

A lovely birthday day trip for my little 2 year old, which completely tired her out!
