On Wednesday night I was invited to see The Bodyguard starring Alexandra Burke at Edinburgh Playhouse. This is a stage version of the 1992 film starring Whitney Houston and featuring the hit song ‘I Will Always Love You’. I love Whitney’s music and so I was looking forward to seeing Alexandra in the role.
I haven’t seen the film for about 15 years, so had completely forgotten what happens. The story is good and there are a few surprises along the way. Alexandra plays Rachel Marron, a music superstar who is nominated for an Oscar. In the lead up to the ceremony a stalker threatens her and she hires a bodyguard to tighten up security. The show is about the relationship between Rachel and her bodyguard.
It’s the music that really makes it – I Will Always Love You, Greatest Love Of All, I Have Nothing, I’m Every Woman, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, One Moment In Time, Saving All My Love, So Emotional .. the list goes on! I’m not sure if all those songs were in the film, but they fit into the story perfectly.
Alexandra’s performance was amazing. She has such a strong, powerful voice and makes singing Whitney look easy. The rest of the cast were also brilliant. Stuart Reid made a great Frank (the bodyguard). Melissa James who payed Rachel’s sister and the boy who played her son Fletcher were also fantastic. It was a standing ovation and they had the whole audience up dancing and singing along at the end.
Even if you’re unfamiliar with the film, this is a really great musical. I would recommend it to anyone who likes Whitney Houston’s music – and that’s most people I think! The show is on in Edinburgh until 10th October and it then continues its tour around the UK.
