Family Meal at Amber Restaurant

Happy New Year! We’ve had a fun filled festive break, but the fun doesn’t stop just because it’s January. It’s my birthday this month, so on Saturday we went for a nice family meal to Amber Restaurant (located inside the Scotch Whisky Experience).

I arrived on Saturday lunch time with my husband, three year old daughter and almost one year old son. The place was warm and cosy, in contrast to the snowy weather outside!

The restaurant was busy and surprisingly full of families with young children. I discovered later it was because they had a special offer running with Teeny Tiny Toddler Fest at Camera Obscura across the road. (I went to this event last year and it was great).

We ordered from the Winter Lunchtime Menu, which had a great selection of locally sourced dishes. There was a map of Scotland on the back showing where all the ingredients came from. I chose a beef, mushroom and stout casserole with crusty bread and my husband went for haggis, neeps and tatties. We both thought our food was amazing. My casserole was so tasty and there was so much meat I could hardly finish it .. but I did! For dessert we had dark chocolate and orange liqueur mousse with whipped mascarpone and chocolate wafers. This was yummy, but it wasn’t a mousse. It was rich and dense, more of a ganache. Still, it was delicious! My husband had a whisky to go with it, which he said complemented it really well. I had a nice cup of tea.

The kids menu was not your usual ‘fish fingers and chips’ deal, which we thought was great as it still had a lot of child-friendly dishes. My three year old chose the tapas selection, full of tasty snacks kids like to eat .. ham, cheese, bread, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, carrot sticks. My son had his first ever haggis, neeps and tatties. This kids’ portion was presented just as nicely as the adult one, and just as tasty. Even though he’s only eleven months old he almost ate the lot. They didn’t really have any kid’s desserts, so we just asked for a couple of scoops of ice cream, which went down very well. I’m always amazed how much ice cream my three year old can eat!

The service was great and we had a lovely, relaxed lunch at Amber Restaurant. I would thoroughly recommend it for families and I think it would be nice to go as a couple in the evening too – the dinner menu looks lovely! I’m sure we will return.
