Portobello Beach

Portobello, Edinburgh, EH15 1BQ

Known locally as ‘Porty’, Portobello is a small seaside town to the east of Edinburgh with views overlooking the Forth. The sandy beach is two miles wide and is popular with swimmers and sunbathers in sunny weather. The beach has won lots of awards for cleanliness, water quality and visitor facilities.

There are bars, cafes, restaurants and gift shops along the beach front. There’s also a Victorian swimming pool, Turkish baths and more. What’s more, the beach and promenade become venues for various events over the summer. Including, a triathlon and beach volleyball competition, sailing regattas, beach bootcamps and the Big Beach Busk. There’s a regular programme of public art, and close by in Brighton Park there’s a monthly farmers market.

Portobello is about 20 minutes drive from the city centre and can be reached by taking the 26 bus (towards Tranent / Seton Sands). You can find more information at Portobello Online.

Cramond Island and Beach

Cramond, Edinburgh, EH4 6NP

This is an old fishing village to the north of Edinburgh. Cramond is very picturesque, with a sandy beach, harbour, lovely seaside walks, beach-side shops, pubs and cafes. The area is full of history too, as it is one of the earliest known sites of human settlement in Scotland.

When the tide is low it’s possible to walk over the causeway to Cramond Island, where there are great views back to the mainland and all around the coastline. But, you must check the noticeboard for tide times before going across. As it’s possible to get stuck on the island if the tide comes in.

You can reach Cramond on the 41 bus from the city centre, which takes 30 – 40 minutes. Local information is available from The Cramond Association.

East Lothian Beaches

If you’re willing to venture a little further out of town, there are some stunning sandy beaches about an hours drive away in East Lothian. This area boasts a 40 mile stretch of beautiful coastline. Belhaven Bay, Gullane Bents, Longniddry Bents, Misley Bay, Seacliff, Thorntonloch, Yellowcraig and Whitesands are all popular. Details of each beach are available on the Visit East Lothian website.

So, pack your bucket and spade, and get down to the beach!
