Leith is a lively Edinburgh neighbourhood, located to the north of the city centre and easy to get to via bus and tram. This was once Edinburgh’s busy port and an independent burgh, until it was officially incorporated into the city in 1920. It has a rich maritime history that still shapes its character today. Over the last few decades it has been transformed into a modern visitor destination. Now you can enjoy restaurants, cafés, shops and attractions, all while taking in the history of this fascinating area.
One of Leith’s biggest attractions is the Royal Yacht Britannia, permanently docked at the Ocean Terminal leisure centre, where you can step on board and see how the Royal Family once travelled. The area is also great for shopping, with independent shops and great local markets. There’s everything available from cosy pubs to fine dining on the waterfront. You can also access the Water of Leith Walkway here, a scenic route that stretches 12 miles, between Leith and the Pentland Hills.
